Jyoti runs her household, and dreams of becoming a teacher
posted March 25, 2011

Thirteen year old Jyoti was enrolled in Apna Skool three years back and is studying in the 3rd grade. Her father, Dulare, and mother, Somvati, migrated from the Fetehpur district in U.P to Kanpur, where they are working as laborers in a brick kiln. She is the oldest of seven children.
They live near the brick kiln and Jyoti goes to an Apna Skool education centre near her place of residence. Since both her parents work, she is responsible for all the household chores- she does the cooking, washes clothes and dishes, and even looks after her six younger siblings. Occasionally, she also assists her parents in making bricks since their earnings are more of all the members of the family pitch in.
Jyoti does get tired with all the work but nevertheless attends Apna Skool regularly, because she dreams of becoming a teacher one day. This drives her to attend school regularly, despite the hardships she faces. Besides, she also loves playing kho-kho with her friends in school.
